Understanding Emotions and the Brain
In the article "Creating a Peace Place at Home" I referenced different parts of the brain and the role a Peace Place plays in helping kids to control their strong feelings. I recorded another short video to explain three main parts of the brain- the brain stem, the cortex, and the amygdala- and what happens in those parts of the brain when we are feeling strong emotions. Understanding what happens in the brain is crucially important in helping a child (and ourselves) get in control of their feelings and their responses to those feelings.
